The British Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrated academic merit and the potential to become world leaders and influencers in their chosen fields. 

The UK government’s international scholarship program, Chevening, provides future leaders a rare chance to study in the UK. Outstanding rising leaders who choose to study for a one-year master’s degree at any UK university are given these scholarships. 

The countries that receive the largest number of awards each year are India, China, and the USA. Possess a bachelor’s degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate program at a UK university. 

The fully-funded master’s scholarship Chevening Scholarship 2023-2024 for international students is available. The Chevening Scholarship pays university tuition fees and provides a monthly living allowance. It also includes return economy airfare to the UK. There are additional grants and allowances available to help with essential expenses.

Who is Eligible for the British Chevening Scholarships? 

The British Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals with demonstrated academic merit and the potential to become world leaders and influencers in their chosen fields.

The program supports ambitious young people passionate about international development but cannot afford to study abroad. It offers them an opportunity to pursue a one-year master’s at any UK university, providing them with financial support for their studies.

The scholarship program is open to all nationalities, religions, and ethnic groups, including people from Commonwealth countries (except India) who hold British citizenship or have been born outside the UK but meet other eligibility criteria.

You’re not eligible for a British Chevening scholarship if;

  • If you are not a citizen in a British Overseas Territory (BOT) or BN(O), you hold British or dual citizenship, and you apply from Hong Kong.
  • You hold refugee status in a non-Chevening country. A scholarship is available to applicants who are citizens of a Chevening eligible country or have refugee status in a Chevening eligible country.
  • You are an employee, a former worker, or a relative* of an Employee of Her Majesty’s Government, or were within the last two years from the opening of Chevening Applications (including British embassies/high commissioners; the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, Department for International Trade, and the Ministry of Defence), or a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
  • Former employees and relatives* employees of Chevening Partner organizations are eligible to apply.

Benefits of the British Chevening Scholarships 

These are the benefits of the Chevening Scholarship:

  • Support for full tuition fees
  • Economy class travel from and to the recipient’s country. A settlement or arrival allowance. This covers the cost of applying for a clearance visa. The allowance at the time you leave. As a contribution towards the cost of TB testing, an allowance of 75 GBP. It will be provided to those who are in need.
  • Travel top-up allowance
  • An allowance or stipend that covers living and housing expenses. It is calculated based on where the scholar lives (inside or out of London).

These Chevening scholarships award around 1500 British Council Scholarships to deserving students each year.

The scholarship amount depends on the country of origin, but generally, it is between €5,000 and €8,000 per year. In addition to this basic amount, you will also receive an additional allowance for travel costs (return airfare), accommodation, and health insurance.

Requirements for the British Chevening Scholarships 

The required documents to apply for Chevening Scholarships include:

  • Reference Letters
  • Study plan, research proposal
  • (SOP) Statement of purpose
  • Academic Transcripts
  • Intent letter
  • Passport or National Identity Card scans.
  • The English language test results were taken by applicants whose first language is not English and who haven’t previously attended a school where English is the predominant language of instruction. Make sure that all documents are in PDF format and no larger than 5 MB. 

How to Apply for the British Chevening Scholarships 

The timeline below highlights the major dates for the British Chevening Scholarships. Take note of the dates below to avoid missing out on the deadlines. 

  • The application window for the Chevening Scholarships opened on 2 August 2022. The last date to apply for the scholarship will be 1 November 2022.
  • Applications will be assessed against the eligibility requirements from November 2022 to February 2023. All applications are evaluated by the scholarship committee and the British embassy, which then selects a shortlist of applicants for the interview stage.
  • Interviews with the shortlisted candidates will take place from 28 February to 29 April. The scholarship outcomes will be made public in early June. 
  • In September or October of 2023, the successful scholars will begin their studies in the UK and become part of an international network of students.

What do I do if I don’t have visa application center access?

If there is no Visa Application Centre in your country or it is closed to you, Chevening might be able to help pay the cost of traveling to another country to obtain a visa. Once the scholar arrives, a visa travel cost reimbursement will be completed.

I was notified by the university that the course I applied for is no longer being offered. What can I do?

You can apply for an alternate course if your chosen course is no longer available. To find another Chevening-eligible course, you can look at our course finder. After you submit your online application, you can’t make any changes to the course selections.

What documents do I need for my Chevening application? 

As long as the official transcript or degree certificate is from your university, applicants can upload them. The original documents are required but do not have to be translated into English.

What if my scholarship ends?

All scholars must return to the country/territory where they were awarded for two years after their award is complete.

I want to change my application for my name, address, citizenship, or date of birth. How can I do this?

Your query does not have to prevent you from applying. Suppose your query is not related to a problem preventing you from submitting your application (e.g., spelling errors, incorrect dates of birth, incorrect country of residency). In that case, these can be addressed after the application window closes. You must submit your application promptly.
