As we all know there are many minority communities who due to lack of financial funds are not able to continue their higher education. And their dream of pursuing education remains incomplete. By keeping this in mind the department of minority communities has created a new scheme known as Joseph Mundassery Scholarship.

The Joseph Mundassery Scholarship Award is a new scholarship that has been created by the Department of Minority Welfare Government of Kerala to provide educational opportunities among the minority communities students such as Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Sikhs, Muslim, or Parsi. Under this scheme, the economically weaker section people will be able to continue their education at SSLC, Plus 2, and Vocational Higher Secondary Education.

The main aim of launching the Joseph Mundassery Scholarship scheme is to encourage school students to further education in higher studies. Prof. Joseph Mundassery Scholarship Award (PJMS), Kerala invites applications from students in Kerala belonging to minority communities. Provided by the Department of Minority Welfare, Government of Kerala, this scholarship aims to support school students from weaker sections to pursue their education at SSLC (matriculation), plus 2 and VHSE level.

The applicant should belong to one of Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Budha, Parsi, Jain communities, and Below Poverty Line (BPL) family.

In the absence of students of the BPL category, students belonging to the Non-Creamy layer, from Minority Communities will be considered for the Scholarship.

Who is Joseph Mundassery

Joseph Mundassery (17 July 1903 – 25 October 1977) was a Kerala-born literary critic and politician. He specialized in Malayalam literature and language. In Kerala politics, he is remembered as the Education Minister who pushed through the contentious Education Bill of the first EMS communist government in 1957.

Joseph Mundassery was born in the Thrissur district of Kandasankadavu. Following his local education, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Physics, followed by a master’s degree in Sanskrit and Malayalam. He was the Head of the Department of Foreign Languages at St. Thomas College in Trichur until 1952.

Mundassery entered politics through the Kochi Prajamandalam and was elected to the princely state of Cochin’s Legislative Council (MLC) in 1948 from the Aranattukara constituency. In 1954, he was elected to the Travancore-Cochin Assembly as an MLC from Cherpu.

Following the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, he won the Assembly election from Manalur in 1957 and went on to become Kerala’s first Education Minister in the EMS Communist ministry (1957–59). Finally, in 1970, he was elected to the Trichur constituency as an MLA.

Eligibility

Minority welfare scholarship is designed for Indian students. Applicants should belong to one of Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Budha, Parsi, Jain communities, and Below Poverty Line (BPL) family.

  • Have an annual family income of fewer than 8 lakhs.
  • Be a native of the state of Kerala.

The following rewards will be provided to the selected students under Joseph Mundassery Scholarship:

  • The students under SSLC with A+ great will be rewarded with Rs. 10,000
  • The undergraduate students with 80% of marks will get Rs. 15,000
  • The postgraduate student with 75% of marks will get Rs. 15,000
