About McGill University Scholarships

McGill University Scholarships 2022-2023 are fully funded scholarships for international students. This scholarship is offered to undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. studies. This scholarship provides up to $8,500 for an undergraduate and a modest amount of bursaries for master’s and Ph.D. students.

The goal of the program is to make the University more accessible to those who face financial challenges by supplementing other funding resources such as government aid, Indigenous Band Support Funding, part-time work, parental support, and other sources of funding.

McGill’s Scholarships offers a merit-based Entrance Scholarship Program and a need-based Entrance Bursary Program for all newly accepted, first-year, first-degree undergraduate students.

Similarly, The Scholarships & Student Aid Office administers an In-Course Financial Aid Program that provides modest amounts of loans and/or bursaries to currently enrolled graduate students in need of supplemental financial assistance. 

McGill University is committed to supporting the academic pursuits of qualified undergraduate students who require financial assistance. The University’s Entrance Bursary Program offers entrance bursaries to students from low to modest-income families who demonstrate financial need. Those eligible to apply include all: newly accepted, first-year, first-degree undergraduates, and newly accepted, first-year undergraduates, entering professional programs in Medicine and Law.

McGill University Scholarships for Students

1 – The Weston Fellowship

The Weston Fellowship was established by Arthur and Dawn Weston to recognize and promote the development of university teaching and learning expertise in various disciplines. It is awarded by the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) upon the recommendation of Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) to an outstanding full-time graduate student interested in conducting research on post-secondary teaching and learning in any Faculty.

Value & Duration

Award value varies, $19,000 for 2020-21

Renewable once at the Master’s level, and twice at the Doctoral level. Renewal is subject to maintaining good standing in the program and providing a satisfactory progress report.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible for the Weston Fellowship, candidates must:

• be registered in a graduate program at McGill or have applied and received an Offer of Admission from McGill;
• be registered full-time for the duration of the award;
• Master’s students must be M1 or M2 (as appears on their Minerva transcripts);
• Doctoral students must be PhD1 to *PhD5 (as appears on their Minerva transcripts);
• be conducting (or planning) research on university teaching and learning in any Faculty.
• Preference will be given to doctoral students.

Application Procedures and Requirements

Applicants are required to submit their completed package to [email protected] with the subject line “Weston Fellowship”. Please ensure that each item listed below is included in your application package.

• Completed and signed application form;
• Curriculum vitae ;
• Certified copies of all official transcripts from university-level studies (graduate and undergraduate);
• Explanation of special circumstances (if applicable) that includes any special considerations that may have affected your performance or productivity (e.g. barriers in your academic experience, delays in research results, gaps in your experience);
• Two Referee’s Reports on the prescribed form and sent separately by each Referee to [email protected]

Review Process

The selection committee will review applications and invite the top applicants to an interview towards the end of April. Please note that this interview is mandatory for those who wish to be considered for the final round. Interviews by videoconference may be possible in exceptional circumstances.

2 – Indigenous Graduate Excellence Recruitment Fellowship

In support of the 52 Calls to Action for Truth and Reconciliation at McGill, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies offers recruitment awards to Indigenous applicants to graduate degree programs.

• Master’s (Thesis) – 5,000
• Master’s (Non-thesis) – 2,500

This award is non-renewable and paid in installments over the first 12 months of study. The award is always provided in addition to core funding offered by a department, supervisor, or Faculty and cannot replace that funding.

Eligibility

Eligible students will be contacted by Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies via the email they provided in their application.

3 – Doctoral Student

Internships provide valuable learning experiences, potential career paths, and endless networking opportunities. The high-level skills and knowledge you have earned during your doctoral studies give you the flexibility to explore a variety of industries and organizations. The Doctoral Internship Program will allow you to dip your toe before diving into the workforce.  

Eligibility Criteria:

Students must:

• Be enrolled in a doctoral program at McGill and remain registered full-time during the internship
• Must complete the course Preparing for Your Internship on Minerva and submit the certificate of completion to GPS (if not yet available at the time of submission, must be submitted before payment can be released)
• Be a Ph.D. 6 or earlier
• Have submitted their initial thesis before the start date of the internship 
• Must not have defended their thesis before the start date of the internship
• If applicable, must hold an appropriate work permit for the internship site
• Please note that we do not encourage students to delay their defense date until after their internship. You may defend your thesis during your internship to meet graduation deadlines for the current term.

Note that the purpose of the Doctoral Internship Program is to give students learning experiences outside of their current network. Internships that are part of the student’s current graduate program, or that are related to the student’s research for their degree are not eligible for this opportunity. How to Apply

Students are responsible for securing their internship. However, the GPS website offers resources to help doctoral students achieve this step.

Complete the online application form, and upload the following supporting documents:

• Doctoral Internship Plan including all required signatures. 
• A Personal Statement (max. 1 page) from the applicant indicating why this opportunity is important for their research career
• CV of the applicant
• Students will be required to complete a final report at the end of their internship. 

4 – Anti-Black Racism Initiative Recruitment Awards

GPS offers Graduate Excellence Recruitment Awards to Black applicants to our graduate degree programs. These awards are offered in support of McGill’s Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism by the nomination of their unit, based on self-identification during the admissions process.

Nomination Deadline

• Fall 2022 admits: July 29, 2022
• Winter 2023 admits: November 30, 2022

Eligibility Criteria:

To be offered a fellowship, an applicant must:

• Have received an offer of Admission for a graduate degree at McGill University;
• Self-identify as a Black student during the admissions process. They can do so in their statement, or by contacting their department directly. 
• Intend to register full-time in a graduate degree program at McGill during their first year of study.

Note: students registered in professional Master’s programs where students regularly work full-time and pursue their studies part-time may be eligible for this award. Contact [email protected] to confirm eligibility. The department must submit a nomination directly to Graduate Funding.
